Where is the best place to put a storm shelter?
We get this question quite a bit, and our best answer is to put the shelter in a place where you can get to it in a hurry. If your back yard can accommodate a shelter, then that’s probably the most common. The one piece of advice we offer is to be sure the shelter will not interfere with underground wires, sprinklers or cables.

We do check with Okie to have them mark off where the underground utility wires are, but you will know best where sprinkler lines may be.

How much clearance do I need to fit a storm shelter?
Clearance is one of the biggest issues when adding a storm shelter to your home. We need at least 10’ width and 14’ height to place a storm shelter. If you do not have this much space, you may want to consider placing the shelter on the side of your home. If there is no way that will work either, consider an abover-ground shelter in your garage. These can be fitted into an existing home and are affordable.

How many people can a storm shelter hold?
FEMA guidelines recommend that your shelter have space for 4 (four) square feet per person. However, keep in mind that supplies and seating can effect space inside a shelter. We recommend bench seating instead of folding chairs; they can fit against the wall and take up less space. You can also store supplies underneath them.

How much time between when I order my shelter and it is installed?
The answer to this question varies by season. We can usually install a shelter within 2-3 weeks of your call, but if you order your shelter in peak tornado season (March- July) it can take 2-3 months to receive your shelter.

How long does it take to install my shelter?
Times vary, but it’s quicker than you think. Typically, two hours from start to finish.

What supplies should I put in my storm shelter?
You don’t need a lot of supplies, but it’s a good idea to have flashlights, batteries and an all-weather radio in your shelter.

When do I have to pay for my shelter?
Full payment of shelter is required upon installation. We accept cash, checks, Visa and MasterCard.

What if I need a handicap accessible shelter?
An above-ground shelter installed in your garage or building is an ideal way to protect loved ones who may have trouble navigating stairs. We can retro-fit a shelter to almost any size you need. Click here for common shelter sizes and prices.

Is there anything I need to do before my shelter is installed?
There is very little on your part that needs to be done prior to installation of your shelter. We do recommend you have a clear path with the specifications mentioned above (10’w x 14’h). Other than that, make sure we’re not interfering with your sprinkler system.

The other concern we have is the condition of your ground. Please remember that we may not live in your area and may not be aware of rain (or watering). If the ground is too wet, we cannot install.

How will I know when you’re going to install my shelter?
About 10 days before we install your shelter, we’ll call to let you know that Okie will be out to mark utility lines, etc. At that time, we’ll let you know that they’ll need to have the gate unlocked and dogs put away so they can access your yard.

We will also call you the day before your installation to let you know when we’ll be there and a time frame.
