SEPTIC SYSTEM TIPS

  1. Pump your septic every 4 to 6 years. Insist that the pumping company clean your tank through the manhole on top of your septic tank rather than the clean-out pipe which sticks up through your lawn. Both access lids should be dug up and both the inlet and outlet baffles inspected.

  2. If you use a garbage disposal, pump your tank ever 2-3 years.  Refrain from using your garbage disposal as much as possible.

  3. Space out laundry loads over the course of the week and wash only full loads.  The average load of laundry uses 47 gallons of water.  One or two loads per day, rather than back-to-back loads on Saturday, makes a big difference to your septic system.  High efficiency front loading washing machines are highly recommended for homes on septic systems.

  4. Use liquid laundry detergents.  Powdered laundry detergents use clay based carrier. This clay can solidify inside pipes and lines.

  5. Water conservation is paramount, Install low usage water fixtures.  By installing low waster usage showerheads (2.5 gallons/minute), toilets (1.6 gallons), dishwashers (5.3 gallons), and washing machines (14 gallons), the average family can reduce the amount of water entering the septic system by as much as 20,000 gallons per year!

  6. Fix leaky faucets and running toilets immediately.  You can check for leaks by looking for trickling water in the clean-out pipe located between the house and the septic tank. Also you can have the pumper of your septic tank check for leaks that may be coming into the tank.

  7. Pay close attention to your lateral field after a heavy rain.  Proper grading should keep water from standing on or running over the lateral field.

  8. No mop water, grease, baby wipes, disposable diapers, coffee grounds, household cleaners, automatic toilet bowl cleaners, paints, stains, thinners, tampons, cigarette butts, pesticides, condoms, paper towels and kitty litter.

  9. The average life of a septic system is 20 to 30 years. Following the above tips will help extend the life of your septic system.
